Best Compost Bins for UK Gardens: Buying Guide
Dalek, tumbler or wormery — the right compost bin depends on how much garden waste you actually generate, and how much patience you have.
The "best" compost bin depends entirely on how much waste your garden and kitchen actually produce, and how hands-on you want to be — there isn't one right answer.
The three main types
"Dalek" bins (the tapered plastic bin most UK gardens already have) are cheap, low-maintenance and hold a good volume, but compost at the bottom can take 6–12 months to mature since there's no way to turn the contents easily. Best for a steady trickle of garden and kitchen waste with no urgency.
Tumbler bins rotate on an axle, making it easy to aerate the contents regularly — this speeds decomposition considerably, often producing usable compost in 8–12 weeks. The trade-off is capacity: most tumblers hold far less than a dalek bin, and a full one is genuinely heavy to turn.
Wormeries use composting worms to break down kitchen waste specifically (not tough garden waste like woody prunings). They're compact enough for a balcony or small patio, produce a concentrated liquid feed as a byproduct, but need more attentive management — worms are sensitive to overfeeding, extreme temperatures and the wrong food (citrus, onion and meat all cause problems).
Sizing it right
As a rough guide, a 220–330 litre bin suits an average UK garden. Go smaller only if you have very little garden waste (a small courtyard or balcony), and consider two bins of the same size over one large one — having a second bin "resting" while the first is filling makes it much easier to get compost out without disturbing unfinished material.
What actually matters in construction
- A well-fitting, secure lid keeps rats out — the single biggest source of compost bin complaints in the UK.
- A hatch or removable base panel to dig out finished compost from the bottom without emptying the whole bin.
- UV-stable plastic, since a cheap bin left in full sun for a few summers can become brittle and crack.
Quick reference
- Steady, no rush: dalek bin, 220–330 litres
- Want compost fast: tumbler bin, accept the lower capacity
- Small space, kitchen waste only: wormery
- Always check: a secure lid and a base hatch for removing finished compost
