Bald cypress (Taxodium distichum 'Cascade Falls') is a slow-growing, fast-spreading, evergreen conifer. Its pyramidal shape makes it well suited for landscapes of all sizes. Its dark green fan-shaped leaves, which turn yellow-orange in autumn, attract attention in the fall. It has an interesting habit of dropping its needles every year, leaving only bare trunk and branches, giving the tree a characteristic “bald” look. In wetter climates, bald cypress will produce attractive, woody, vertical “cypress knees”, which are actually swollen roots that reach different heights above the ground, often serving as a habitat for small mammals and birds.
