Symphyotrichum praealtum, commonly known as aster, is an herbaceous perennial native to open woodlands of the southeastern United States. Growing up to 40 inches tall, it has toothed foliage and produces fragrant lavender-blue, daisy-like flowers in late summer and early autumn. These flowers are held on strong stems above the foliage and are a favorite of butterflies and bees. Easily subdivided, aster responds well to pruning and is generally trouble-free. It grows best in moist soils that are full of nutrients and can provide a splash of brilliant color to both gardens and wild areas.
